Japanese fashion brand Onitsuka Tiger continues to appeal to fashionistas around the world with a contemporary collection that combines fashion and sports, and heritage and innovation.
On October 23, 2019, Onitsuka Tiger held its runway show for the Spring & Summer 2020 designed by Creative Director Andrea Pompilio at the Shin-toyosu Brillia Running Stadium illuminated in illusionary blue light.
At the venue, about 450 guests attended, including Brand Ambassador Naomi Watanabe, Han Huo Huo, Bank Thiti, Toc Tien as well as other millennial influencers and people from the fashion industry.
The runway show started with nouvelle urban sporty performance, such as tricking and wheel gymnastics, demonstrated by athletes active on the front lines, together with a musical performance by a marching band. This collection, paid homage to Kihachiro Onitsuka, the founder of Onitsuka Tiger which celebrates the 70th
anniversary this year, was inspired by the uniforms from various sports.
In addition to tank tops and shorts inspired by the mesh materials of basketball uniforms, denim cargo pants were inspired by climbing, fitted multicolored T-shirts inspired by racing, padded jackets by taking their inspiration from horse riding, coats made of transparent materials inspired by sailing, a fitted bicolor knit
pullover weaved in polyester thread which was inspired by diving, and a gorgeous, feminine satin evening dress taking its inspiration from boxing robe. Speaking about the exclusive line "TOKYO ONITSUKA" which appeared in the finale, Pompilio says, "At the moment I saw the graphics in the archive, the red dots looked
like hearts and the message "Onitsuka Tiger Loves Tokyo" came to my mind." This capsule collection, which has revived archival graphics and brought them up to date to share the history of Onitsuka Tiger, will be launched early November and is limited to stores in Japan.
The color pallet represents a fresh and sporty mood from black to neon yellow, neon orange, and indigo.
This collection consists of five important elements — The New Youth; The Modern Uniform; The New Casual; The Sports Obsession; and The Free Spirit — with the attitude of "The Masculine Feminine", "The Genderless" and "The Global Diversity".
The venue, Shin-toyosu Brillia Running Stadium, was transformed into a near-futuristic space just for this night. This year, the facility received the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize (Architectural Design Division) and is attracting attention as the stadium and laboratory where sports, art, and technology are lively
combined. In this site, an exquisite wooden arch, which looks like furniture, extends and warm wood material creates a calm comfort although the appearance is near-futuristic.
After the runway show, the guests enjoyed the world of the brand in a very relaxed mood with the cozy music of a quartet at CITABRIA BAYPARK Grill & Bar which provided an unrealistic, beautiful night view of Toyosu.
